Capsize survivors wore life vests

GARIBALDI, Ore., June 16 (UPI) -- Only the 10 survivors of a fishing boat that capsized off Oregon were wearing life vests, a newspaper said Monday.

None of the nine dead were, the Ventura County (Calif.) Star reported.

Coast Guard helicopters and boats returned for several hours Sunday to search for two men still missing since the accident at the mouth of Tillamook Bay a day earlier but the ocean search was later called off.

On shore, federal investigators walked the beach, collecting the remaining soaked life jackets that had washed up from the wreck of the Taki Tooo.

National Transportation Safety Board official John Goglia told reporters the investigation would examine the condition of the ocean when the 32-foot boat set out early Saturday.

He questioned the size of the Taki Tooo for the ocean conditions -- the harbor had been closed to recreational boats because of the high surf Saturday morning, but not to charter boats.
