A neighbor was arrested soon after and charged with aggravated assault, and appears in court Thursday. Police said 38-year-old Margueritte Dias and Monast had been involved in a lengthy dispute, which is in the courts. No details were provided.

Monast is in critical condition following reconstructive surgery.

Both women are single mothers of five children.
