WASHINGTON, June 7 (UPI) -- In his weekly radio address, President George W. Bush said Saturday it is time to make progress on prescription drug benefits for seniors.
Bush said when Medicare was launched 38 years ago, medicine focused on surgery and hospital stays but now doctors routinely treat patients with prescription drugs, preventive care, and ground-breaking medical devices.
The president said those who like their Medicare coverage as it is should be able to stay but those who want more coverage for preventive care should be able to choose from multiple health plans.
However, seniors who want the benefits of managed care plans -- including prescription drug coverage -- should be able to choose from a range of plans.
Bush added that extra help should be given to low-income seniors.
