American troops ambushed in Iraq

BAGHDAD, June 7 (UPI) -- An American soldier was killed and four others were wounded Saturday in an ambush near Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit.

Voice of America reported the attack was the latest in a series the U.S. military blames on remnants of Hussein's ousted Baathist Party government.

Military officials said the troops were attacked by gunmen firing small arms and a rocket grenade.

The attacks occurred as U.N. experts toured an abandoned nuclear plant near Baghdad. The plant was plundered and looted during the U.S.-led war and military officials are concerned with the whereabouts of refined uranium ore that was stored at the plant.

The team toured the sprawling complex for several hours under the guard of U.S. troops.

Officials said the military will continue efforts to recover radioactive barrels that local villagers may be using to store drinking water and also help secure the area around the damaged plant.
