Doctor, wife charged in 7 deaths

ALBUQUERQUE, June 6 (UPI) -- An Albuquerque doctor and his wife are charged with the first-degree murder of seven patients over three years at their medical clinic, a report said Friday.

A grand jury handed down an indictment late Thursday citing 65 felony charges against Dr. Jesse Henry Jr., and his wife Hong Lu Henry, the Albuquerque Journal reported.

The couple is suspected of supplying patients with narcotic painkillers sufficient to cause an overdose.

Jesse Henry's attorney, Peter Schoenburg, said some patients were prescribed dosages at his walk-in clinic that were appropriate if taken on their own but, mixed with street drugs, they resulted in fatal overdoses.

The investigation began as an inquiry by the state Board of Medical Examiners into Henry's prescribing "inordinate and 'injudicious amounts' of controlled substances" to patients,

The doctor told a DEA investigator he took patients at their word if they said they were in pain.
