EVENT: CITY OF ROCKVILLE presents Hometown Holiday Celebration.

AGENDA: Highlights:

At 9 a.m. - The Rockville Concert Band and Rockville Community Chorus will perform a musical tribute to America, leading into the wreath-laying at 9:30, a 21-gun salute and presentation of colors.

At 10:30 a.m., - The 59th Memorial Day Parade, "A Tribute To American Heroes," begins at Martins Lane and North Washington Street -- with drill teams, marching bands, community groups and military units.

Carnival rides and games remain open until 5 p.m.

11 p.m. - Presidential Wreath Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns

5 p.m. – Women in Military Service for America Memorial (at the gateway to Arlington Cemetery):

The ceremony will include formal military honors, remarks by women serving in the military and personal tributes to departed comrades.

EVENT: VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL annual tribute to those who served and died in Vietnam. The ceremony features a presentation of colors, wreath-layings by patriotic organizations, remarks by special guests and the song "More Than a Name on the Wall" sung by Jimmy Fortune.

EVENT: MEMORIAL DAY JAZZ FESTIVAL including Vanniece Johnson of WJZW will emcee the festival, with performances by the Army Blues Jazz Ensemble, Yvonne Johnson, Doc Dikeman, Al Williams and the Village Jazz Band. Food and beverages will be available for purchase, but picnics are welcome. No alcoholic beverages are permitted.

EVENT: NO GREATER LOVE presents a 'National Moment of Remembrance': Americans Will Pause in an Act of Remembrance and Unity.

AGENDA: The commemorations also will include a moment of silence at 3 p.m. The Memorial Day tradition began with recognition of the war dead after the Civil War, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers. In 1959, Congress proclaimed the day be set aside as a day of prayer for permanent peace in recognition of those Americans who died in service to their country. Memorial Day was observed on May 30 until 1971, when Congress decreed that it be observed annually on the last Monday in May.
