AGENDA: The "Unseen America" project started as a way for the Local 1199 of the SEIU to share the stories of its growing immigrant membership. Bread and Roses, the not-for-profit cultural arm of 1199/SEIU, secured100 donated cameras and organized introductory photography classes for immigrant workers. After receiving the classroom training, each worker was sent out with five rolls of film each week with instructions to document their lives at work. The project resulted in thousands of photographs of rarely captured workplace scenes, some of which will be on exhibit at the Department of Labor
