Shoebomber gets life in prison

BOSTON, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Confessed shoe-bomber Richard Reid was sentenced to life in prison Thursday for trying to blow up a transit airliner. An admitted member of al Qaida, Reid pleaded guilty to trying to blow up an airliner with 197 people on board over the Atlantic Ocean on Dec. 22, 2001.
