AUSTIN, Texas, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Brandon Mouton scored 12 of his 16 points in the first half as eighth-ranked Texas grabbed an early lead Monday night and held on for a 58-50 triumph over Louisiana Tech.

Mouton made a trio of 3-pointers and all five of his free-throw attempts for Texas (8-2), which has won three straight since dropping back-to-back games. The victory also was the 300th for Longhorns coach Rick Barnes.

Texas won despite a poor effort from star guard T.J. Ford, who was just 2-of-9 from the field and committed four turnovers. But the Longhorns opened the contest with a 10-0 run and led 34-29 at halftime.

Darrian Brown led Louisiana Tech (3-4) with 13 points, but the Bulldogs made just 4-of-21 3-point attempts and committed 18 turnovers.
