Houston climber falls to death

HOUSTON, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- A man climbed to the 30th floor of one of Houston's tallest buildings Monday and then jumped to his death, witnesses said.

A driver's license and political note of some kind were found on the 20-year-old man's body, but police did not immediately identify the climber.

The climb was first reported to police about 7 a.m. as the man slowly scaled the 64-story Williams Tower in the Galleria section of Houston.

At about 7:45 a.m. he reached the 30th floor, appeared to pause, and then jumped, witnesses said.

"He didn't have (any) energy left it looked like," witness Pat Osborne told KPRC-TV. "He looked to the right and just pushed off."

The climber apparently reached the outside of the tower from the 10th floor, fire department spokesman Jay Evans said.

The man was not wearing a safety harness, but he was using some kind of a climbing device, possibly a suction cup, witnesses said.
