Beauprez official winner of Colo. race

DENVER, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Republican Bob Beauprez Tuesday was officially declared the winner of the 7th Congressional District race in Colorado.

Secretary of State Donetta Davidson announced the 121-vote victory for Beauprez after an automatic recount triggered by the closeness of his race with Democrat Mike Feeley.

Beauprez appeared to be the winner by 122 votes when a count of provisional ballots was completed Nov. 21 in the closest congressional race in Colorado history. He lost only one vote in the automatic recount.

The final numbers were 81,789 votes for Beauprez and 81,668 for Feeley.

Earlier in the day, Jefferson County elections officials had reported discovering 535 uncounted ballots but in the end it made little difference. They did not change the outcome in that county or in the district.

Susan Miller, Jefferson County elections director, blamed the mix-up on mechanical and human errors. The county was using new electronic machines after 32 years of punch card ballots.

Beauprez went to Washington after the apparent Nov. 21 victory and opened his office.
