Lott apologizes for Thurmond remarks

WASHINGTON, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., apologized for saying the nation would have benefited by electing segregationist presidential candidate-turned U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond in 1948. Lott, soon to be the Senate majority leader, apologized for comments made last week at Thurmond's 100th birthday celebration.
