NASHVILLE, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Federal disaster funds became available for Tennessee as parts of the state were declared a major federal disaster Wednesday by President Bush and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Joe Allbaugh and Tennessee Gov. Don Sundquist toured the areas that were hit by tornadoes on Sunday.
Allbaugh said 16 Tennessee counties -- Anderson, Bedford, Carroll, Coffee, Crockett, Cumberland, Gibson, Henderson, Madison, Marshall, Montgomery, Morgan, Rutherford, Scott, Sumner and Tipton -- were covered by the declaration, which allows affected residents and business owners to seek federal aid.
"President Bush has made this declaration so Tennesseeans can get back on their feet and go on with their lives as quickly as possible," Allbaugh said.
A FEMA spokeswoman said "more counties could be declared" disaster areas after investigation by federal, state and county experts.
A swarm of deadly tornadoes and two lines of storms in Tennessee killed 16 people and injured 80 Sunday. Among the victims were a man and his 3-month-old granddaughter who were killed in their vehicle as they tried to flee.
In Morgan County, where Mossy Grove and Joyner were hit hard, Sheriff Bobby Gibson asked people to stay out of the area.
The National Weather Service said it was a Level 3 tornado that struck the county, meaning it had 160- to 200-mph winds.
