AUGUSTA, Maine, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- In Maine's 2nd Congressional District, Democrat Mike Michaud held an 8 percentage point lead early Wednesday over Republican Kevin Raye.
Unofficial returns from 67 percent of the precincts showed the state Senate president pro tempore with 54 percent of the vote to 46 percent for Raye, a former chief of staff for U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe.
Michaud, a paper mill worker, and Raye battled in a tight race to replace four-term Democratic U.S. Rep John Baldacci, who was elected Maine's new governor.
Baldacci will replace Independent Gov. Angus King, who did not seek re-election because of term limits.
During the campaign, Michaud stressed his long legislative record that included bringing research and development money to the state.
Michaud, 45, works at the same paper mill, Great Northern Paper Co., where his father and grandfather worked.
