FAA forces Boeing airliner precautions

WASHINGTON, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- The Federal Aviation Administration, in an emergency airworthiness directive, spelled out precautions Friday for pilots of most Boeing airliners while fuel pumps are inspected to see if they could ignite vapors in wing tanks. Pilots must preserve enough fuel to submerge the pump so any sparks are suppressed, preventing the kind of explosion that downed TWA Flight 800 that crashed off Long Island in 1996.
