As drought continues to plague much of the country, the report concludes that sprawl development is partly to blame for water shortages. The report demonstrates that the increase of asphalt and other impervious surfaces of sprawl aggravates drought by reducing the natural replenishment of underground aquifers, which can lead to lower water levels in streams, rivers, and lakes.
