HUNTSVILLE, Texas, June 13 (UPI) -- A Texas death row inmate was executed Thursday for the 1996 robbery and murder of a service station attendant.
Daniel E. Reneau, 27, was pronounced dead at 6:15 p.m. CDT shortly after receiving a lethal injection for murdering 31-year-old Kris Lee Keeran in the holdup at Kerrville in central Texas.
Reneau had no final statement.
In 1996 Reneau pulled a .22 caliber pistol and shot Keeran once in the face and then fled with the store safe, a cash box, and a videocassette recorder containing a security tape. The safe and cash box contained $11,350 in cash and checks.
Reneau and accomplice Jeffery Wood were arrested the next day and confessed to the crime, according to police. Investigators recovered the murder weapon, the store safe and charred security tape the two had attempted to destroy.
The Supreme Court refused to hear Reneau's latest appeal this week.
Wood was also sentenced to death but no execution date has been scheduled.
Reneau was the 16th convicted killer to be executed this year in Texas and the 272nd since the state restored the death penalty in 1982.
