Protests expected to mark Roe v. Wade

WASHINGTON, Jan. 22 (UPI) -- Protest marches are expected Tuesday as opposing groups mark the 29th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion.

Abortion opponents are expected to hold a "March for Life" rally on the grounds of the Washington monument. The anti-abortion activists oppose the Jan. 22, 1973 ruling known as Roe vs. Wade and have lobbied to see it overturned.

Supporters of legalized abortions will gather at the Supreme Court for a vigil, demanding the Bush administration uphold Roe versus Wade. Kim Gandy, president of the National Organization for Women will address the rally.

Abortion became legal in the United States after the Supreme Court struck down a Texas anti-abortion law as unconstitutional. A woman known as "Jane Roe," who was denied an abortion because her life was not at stake, challenged the Texas law.

The woman, whose real name is Norma McCorvey, gave birth to the child but gave it up for abortion. In recent years, McCorvey has become a member of the anti-abortion movement.
