WASHINGTON, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- The Cato Institute announced the first Milton Friedman Prize for the Advancement of Liberty will be presented at the Cato's 25th anniversary dinner May 9, 2002. The $500,000 cash award will be presented to one individual whose accomplishments and achievements best advance the cause of liberty.
The prize, named in honor of the Nobel Prize-winning American economist Cato calls "the most distinguished advocate of liberty in the latter part of the 20th century" will be presented every other year to the individual Cato decides has done the most to advance human freedom.
The Friedman Prize has been established with the support of California businessman John Pasquesi. The winner need meet only one criterion: to have done the most to advance human freedom in the opinion of those making nominations, and the prize committee. Nominees may be from any and all walks of life.
