Cansecos charged with assault

MIAMI BEACH, Fla., Nov. 14 (UPI) -- Baseball slugger Jose Canseco of the Chicago White Sox and his twin brother, Ozzie Canseco, were released on bond Wednesday on aggravated assault charges.

Jose Canseco a Miami resident, said they were only trying to protect their dates, who were assaulted by two other men Halloween night at a Miami Beach, Fla., night club, Opium. Jose Canseco was released on $15,000 bond and Ozzie, a former major leaguer, paid $7,500.

Police said the Canseco's assaulted two tourists from California. One suffered a broken nose and the other had to get 20 stitches in his lip.

"A gentleman lifted up my date's skirt and grabbed her but from behind, very deep and very hard -- very aggressively. He sexually assaulted her," Jose Canseco said. "One gentleman came at me very aggressively. I then pushed him back."

Alext Pressley, 38, of Laguna Beach, Calif., and Alan Chjeeks, 33, of Redondo Beach, Calif., reported the incident to police and then returned home.

The Cansecos reported to Miami Beach police headquarters voluntarily Tuesday and after interrogations, police decided to charge them and detain them. They were released on bond the next day.

"I know that my brother and myself were definitely victims and the girl I was with got sexually assaulted. We got attacked. We are the victims here. We just defended ourselves and we don't know what's going to become of this," Jose Canseco said.

Canseco has one conviction for simple battery. In 1997 he was convicted of hitting his second wife, Jessica Canseco. He pleaded no contest and was sentenced to one year's probation.
