Newcomer becomes Miami mayor

MIAMI, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Political upstart Manny Diaz, who gained notice by representing the family of Elian Gonzalez last year, defeated six-term former mayor Maurice Ferre to become Miami's new mayor. Diaz collected 55.3 percent of the vote to 44.7 for Ferre in a runoff election.
