WASHINGTON, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- In a move raising eyebrows around the media, the Huffington Post has hired former NFL wide receiver Donte Stallworth as a National Security Fellow.

Recommended by Huffington Post and ESPN writer Amanda Terkel, Stallworth seems to many to be an odd hire for a number of reasons, especially given his title.

In 2009, Stallworth served a one year suspension after pleading guilty to DUI manslaughter and serving 24 days in jail. Additionally, as Gawker first noted, Stallworth was at one point an outspoken 9/11 truther, tweeting his views for the world to see in 2009.

After attention turned to his controversial ideas about 9/11, Stallworth explained to the Washington Post that those tweets are the dated excitements of burgeoning, but still unstudied, history buff.

"That was kind of around the time where I started to really just look at certain things. I really didn't have knowledge other than from a couple of sources. Once I got out of that rabbit hole and started doing my own research ... I just understood what a massive intelligence failure 9/11 was ... My whole thought process changed on it once was able to dig in and research more about it."

While in the NFL, Stallworth played for the Eagles, Saints, Patriots, Browns, Ravens and Redskins.
