CANBERRA, Australia, July 13 (UPI) -- Australian Olympic swimmer Ian Thorpe announced he is gay during an interview on Australian television.

The nine-time Olympic medalist confirmed the news during an interview on Channel 10 with Michael Parkinson scheduled to air Sunday.

"I think his sexuality is no one's business but his own. But I think it's one of the best interviews I have ever done in terms of (Thorpe) talking about depression and things like that," Parkinson said.

Thorpe previously denied he was gay in his 2012 autobiography, This is Me, and has even dated women in the past.
