Andy Murray, the No. 1-ranked player in the world, withdrew from next week's Miami Open due to an elbow injury.

"Sadly, due to a right elbow injury, I won't be playing in Miami," Murray said in a statement Saturday while apologizing to the fans. "The focus now is on getting ready for the clay season."

Murray lost his opening match at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif., last week, falling to qualifier Vasek Pospisil in straight sets.

A two-time champion of the event in 2009 and 2013, Murray seized the No. 1 ranking late last year from Novak Djokovic, who reportedly could also miss the event because of an elbow issue.

Murray is 12-2 on the year, winning his lone title at Dubai while losing in the fourth round of the Australian Open.

World No. 2 Djokovic is a three-time defending champion at Miami and has won the event five times in the past six years.
