U.S. Open 2016: Caroline Wozniacki, Roberta Vinci breeze into third round

Seventh-seeded Roberta Vinci, the 2015 U.S. Open runner-up, cruised into the third round of the tournament for the sixth straight year on Wednesday.

The Italian beat American Christina McHale 6-1, 6-3, needing just 22 minutes to win the first set against her 55th-ranked opponent.

Vinci stunned No. 1 Serena Williams in last year's semifinals to end her bid for the first Grand Slam since 1988. Vinci then lost to countrywoman Flavia Pennetta in the final.

In other matches, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, a former world No. 1 on the WTA Tour who has fallen to No. 74, upset ninth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia 6-4, 6-4.

No. 14 seed Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic beat Cagla Buyukakcay of Turkey 7-6 (2), 6-3. No. 12 Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia rallied to stop Evgeniya Rodina of Russia 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-2. No. 22 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine held off American Lauren Davis 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
