NICE, France, June 27 (UPI) -- Manager Roy Hodgson stepping down from his post as England manager was not enough to subdue its fans, following an exit from UEFA Euro 2016.

Fans absolutely obliterated English strike Harry Kane after the match on social media. Insults invaded the Twitter-verse, attacking Kane's skill and almost everything else about the 22-year-old star.

Tottenham's Kane started the 2-1 loss to Iceland Monday and was unable create anything for the English offense. He also took a barrage of ill-hit free kicks in the loss, catching the eyes of keyboard warriors around the globe.

"Tottenham ace Harry Kane has looked well short of his usual self throughout the tournament and he summed up England's performance with a pretty diabolical free kick that dribbled out of play from 41m," Metro Sports' Sean Kearns wrote of Kane.

ESPN FC was also critical of Kane, giving him a match rating of 3 for the game.

"What on earth has happened to Harry Kane? From perhaps the most deadly striker in the Premier League last season to a shambling, bereft, wreck of a forward who did virtually nothing with conviction," ESPN FC's Nick Miller wrote.

"Most of the time he resembled a centre-back moved up front to provide some physical presence at the end of a game: completely out of place and uncomfortable. You can only blame fatigue so much, for Kane was, and has been, desperate."

Iceland advances to the Euro quarterfinal July 3 against host France in Saint-Denis. The winner of that match faces Germany or Italy in the semi-finals.

Kane was 0-for-13 on shots in the Euro. He hit just three of those attempts on target. The young forward sizzled for the Spurs last season, netting 25 goals in 38 Premier League starts. He hit 74-of-158 shots on target in that span.

The 68-year-old Hodgson took over the English squad in 2012. After the game, Hodgson left a message on England's Twitter account.

"Now is the time for someone else to oversee the progress of this young, hungry, and extremely talented group," Hodgson said. "It's been a fantastic journey."
