Stanley Cup Playoffs: Capitals blank Lightning in Game 6

May 22 (UPI) -- T.J. Oshie scored twice, helping the Washington Capitals even their Eastern Conference finals series with the Tampa Bay Lightning with a Game 6 victory.

The Capitals earned the 3-0 shutout win Monday at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. Game 7 of the series is set for 8 p.m. Wednesday at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla.

Oshie's first score came with 4:48 remaining in the second period of Monday's triumph. Nicklas Backstrom hovered on the right flank before sending a pass between the circles to Oshie. The Capitals winger slapped a one-timer past Andrei Vasilevskiy for a 1-0 advantage.

Washington got another goal with 10:02 remaining in regulation. Jay Beagle and Chandler Stephenson chased the puck down the ice and retrieved it behind the Lightning net on that play. Beagle fired a pass back behind the net again to Stephenson, who fed Devante Smith-Pelly. The right wing blasted a shot past Vasilevskiy once again.

Oshie found the net for a second time with 50 seconds remaining in the third period. Backstrom retrieved the puck after a Lightning turnover. He skated down the ice and passed to Oshie on his left. Oshie shot the puck between defenders and found the empty net for a score.

Capitals net minder Braden Holtby made 24 saves in the shutout.

"[Our leaders] were very determined. They were going to make sure that there was no doubt that we were going to take this to a Game 7," Capitals coach Barry Trotz told reporters. "Really good energy, not only in our room this morning, tonight great energy in the building. Fans weren't apprehensive ... we gave them something to cheer about."
