In 14 games with the Hurricanes last season, Brown skated in a career-high 14 NHL games but did not record a goal or an assist in an average of 9:43 of ice time. He had 12 goals and 16 assists in 66 games with the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL.

Chelios, a 26-year-old defenseman, would also make $650,000 at the NHL level or $85,000 in the AHL, the team said.

He led all Checkers' defenseman in scoring (four goals, 28 assists) with a career-high 32 points last season.

Chelios is the only Checkers' player to appear in all 76 of the team's games in 2016-17, and his plus-21 rating from Jan. 10 until the end of the season ranked second among all AHL players.

The Hurricanes (36-31-15) missed the playoffs last season after finishing seventh out of eight teams in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference.
