New York Rangers ink coach Alain Vigneault to two-year extension

Alain Vigneault and the New York Rangers have agreed to a two-year contract extension through the 2019-20 season, according to multiple reports.

Vigneault, 55, has coached the Rangers to a 175-97-23 mark in his four seasons with the team and helped lead New York to the Stanley Cup Finals in his first season in 2013-14.

The Quebec City, Quebec native is 597-385-84 with 35 ties in his 15 seasons coaching the Rangers, Vancouver Canucks and Montreal Canadiens. He ranks 15th all-time on the NHL's coaching victories list.

Vigneault coached the Canadiens from 1997 until 2001 when he became the Canucks' bench boss. Vigneault is Vancouver's all-time winningest coach (313-170-57) and guided the Canucks to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2010-11.

He replaced fired Rangers coach John Tortorella in the 13-14 season.

New York has made the playoffs in each of Vigneault's first three seasons and is fourth in the Metropolitan Division standings this year at 31-17-1.
