Colts' Andrew Luck: 'Ship has sailed' on more surgery

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck said a second surgery on his right shoulder is not needed in a pre-recorded video at a town hall event held by the team.

"Oh, [surgery] is not an option for me right now," Luck said in the video aired on Tuesday. "I feel very, very good about where I am. So that ship has sailed in my mind, which is also a bit of a relief. I'm not going to lie."

Luck has not taken a snap in a game since the regular-season finale of the 2016 season. He underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum on Jan. 15, 2017.

Recurring soreness in Luck's shoulder prompted the Colts to finally shut him down two weeks after he returned to practice on Oct. 4. The 28-year-old went on injured reserve on Nov. 2.

As to where Luck stands now, he offered the following:

"Yeah, so I'm in the middle of sort of a little bit of throwing, but strengthening and preparing my shoulder to be able to handle the throw load that is part of being an NFL quarterback. So the focus right now is still strengthening all those muscles and making sure that my shoulder can handle it.

"The one thing that I've learned through these couple of years of dealing with it is that I can't skip steps; you have to do everything as well as possible. And as much as I have to catch myself - as much as I want to grab a ball and throw it a million times - I know I have to build up to be able to handle that point, and right now I'm in that building phase still. But it's exciting. I know in my heart of hearts I'm going to be a better thrower, a better quarterback, a better teammate and a better Colt because of what I'm going through, what I've been through and will continue to go through."

New head coach Frank Reich was asked by the Indianapolis Star on Tuesday if he thought Luck would be healthy enough to participate when the Colts begin OTAs later this year.

"You know what, I'm hopeful that maybe that could happen," Reich said. "I'm hopeful, yeah. I know it sounds odd, but I'm not demanding an answer on that. I'm not, 'Hey, someone tell me, is he ready?' I hope he's there, but we'll go on if he's not. I'm optimistic, and I'm hopeful, but honestly that's not the forefront question on my mind every day coming to work."

After appearing in just seven games in 2015 due to injuries, Luck was coming off perhaps his best overall performance in his six-year NFL career in 2016. He completed 346 of 545 passes (63.5 percent) for 4,240 yards with 31 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, and also ran 64 times for 341 yards with two more scores.

For his career, Luck - the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 draft and a three-time Pro Bowler - has completed 1,570 of 2,651 passes (59.2 percent) for 19,078 yards with 132 touchdowns and 68 interceptions. He has 286 rushing attempts for 1,442 yards and 14 more touchdowns.
