Baltimore Ravens CB Jimmy Smith suspended four games for PED violation

Baltimore Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith, who suffered a season-ending left torn Achilles injury in Sunday's game, has been suspended four games for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs, according to multiple reports Monday.

Smith, 29, decided to drop his appeal and begin serving his suspension after being injured in the 44-20 victory over the Detroit Lions, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Smith and the Ravens learned of the pending suspension last week, multiple sources told the Baltimore Sun.

The Ravens are expected to place Smith on injured reserve this week. Players can serve suspensions while on IR.

The suspension will cost Smith a total of $182,352, but he would have lost $2 million if he had not restructured his deal in August, according to ESPN.

Smith, the Ravens' top player in the secondary despite dealing with an Achilles injury for most of the season, was injured in the second quarter Sunday when he fell to the ground while trying to cover a deep route.

Smith, the Ravens' first-round pick in 2011, matched his career high with three interceptions this season. He started the Ravens' first 12 games and also had 26 tackles and nine passes defended.

Rookie first-round pick Marlon Humphrey will replace Smith in the starting lineup this week when the Ravens (7-5) travel to play the AFC North-leading Pittsburgh Steelers (9-2) in a Sunday night game.
