Chicago Bears claim former Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicker Roberto Aguayo

One day after kicker Roberto Aguayo was waived by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Chicago Bears claimed the former second-round draft pick off waivers on Sunday.

To make room on the roster for Aguayo, the Bears put wide receiver Rueben Randle on injured reserve.

Aguayo, a former Florida State All-American, was released by the Buccaneers after he missed an extra point attempt and a field goal try in their 23-12 preseason loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Friday night.

The second-year player struggled through a tumultuous rookie season with Tampa Bay, making just 22 of 31 field-goal attempts for the worst percentage in the NFL (71 percent). He was competing in training camp with Nick Folk, who seemed to have won the job when Aguayo was waived. However, the Bucs brought in kick Zach Hocker on Sunday to challenge Folk.

With the Bears, Aguayo apparently will compete with Connor Barth, who was 18 of 23 on field goal attempts and 31 of 31 on extra point tries last season. Barth was with the Buccaneers in 2016 before he was cut after Tampa Bay drafted Aguayo.

The Buccaneers had traded up in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft to land Aguayo, making him the highest-drafted kicker since Mike Nugent in 2005.
