Arizona Cardinals re-sign veteran RB Chris Johnson

July 20 (UPI) -- Running back Chris Johnson is return for his 10th NFL season after re-signing Thursday with the Arizona Cardinals.

Johnson, 31, returns to the Cardinals on a one-year deal, according to the team. The terms have not been disclosed. He rushed for 96 yards and a touchdown in four games last season before being placed on injured reserve. In 2015, Johnson led the Cardinals with 814 rushing yards on 196 carries.

Johnson is No. 3 among active players with 9,537 career rushing yards. That total ranks fourth among players since Johnson entered the league.

The three-time Pro Bowler was a first-team All-Pro in 2009, when he rushed for 2,006 yards for the Tennessee Titans. Johnson still owns the single season record for yards from scrimmage from that season (2,509).

He was the No. 24 overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. Johnson played his first six seasons with the Titans before signing with the New York Jets in 2014. He joined the Cardinals in 2015.

"It's not many Running backs played ten years or even NFL players played ten years but hey it's a blessing and I'm back at it again. So let's see where this season takes me. #JUICE#BIRDGANG #10KCHASE," Johnson wrote on Instagram.

Johnson's Cardinals teammate Tyrann Mathieu was also happy about the signing.

"I think I want to go out there and see what options I have first," Johnson told Alex Marvez and Gil Brandt of SiriusXM NFL Radio this offseason. "I feel at this point in my career if it's not a situation where a team wants to bring me in to be a starter, I definitely need to be somewhere where I have a role. I need to be involved. At this point in my career, I don't want to sit on the sideline. I want to get in the game."

Johnson said that he wanted to play for a contender this season. Arizona reports to training camp on Friday and have their first practice Saturday. No corresponding move was announced, as the Cardinals already had an open spot on their roster.

Johnson will come in and backup David Johnson, who made himself into a household name last season as one of the best running backs in the NFL. The Cardinals also have Kerwynn Williams and Andre Ellington on their depth chart at the position.
