Ex-CFL QB Vince Young calls Ryan Fitzpatrick 'garbage'

By Alex Butler

June 27 (UPI) -- Vince Young's tenure playing football in Saskatchewan lasted three months. Now he's questioning why Ryan Fitzpatrick is employed by an NFL franchise.

Sports Illustrated published an article Tuesday about Young's journey from National Champion, through the NFL and into the CFL.

The article features several revelations about how Young found his way out of the NFL. It also contains his thoughts about some of the league's lower-level quarterbacks.

"I'd see a quarterback and be like, Dude is garbage, and I'm over here in the kitchen cooking turkey necks," Young told Sports Illustrated.

Young was then reminded that the Arizona Cardinals signed Blaine Gabbert.

"Exactly. I hate to name-drop, but [Ryan] Fitzpatrick is still playing!? He leads the league in interceptions, and he's still [expletive] getting paid? I mean, what the [expletive] is going on?"

Fitzpatrick's 17 interceptions in 2016 were the third-most in the league.

Young, 34, was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft. The 2006 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year played five seasons for the Tennessee Titans, posing a 30-17 record. He also made two Pro Bowls during his tenure with the Titans. Young played his final NFL season for the Philadelphia Eagles, completing 57.9 percent of his passes for 866 yards, four touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Fitzpatrick, 34, was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round of the 2005 NFL Draft. The 12-year veteran has never made a Pro Bowl and owns a 46-69-1 record as a starter. Fitzpatrick has played for the Rams, Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills, Titans, Houston Texans and New York Jets.

He signed as a free agent in May to be Jameis Winston's backup on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' depth chart.

Fitzpatrick joined the Titans three seasons after Young's departure from the franchise. For their careers, Fitzpatrick has thrown 166 touchdowns against 133 interceptions for a 79.7 quarterback rating. Young has 46 touchdown passes against 51 picks and owns a 74.4 career quarterback rating.

The Saskatchewan Roughridgers waived Young earlier this month after he suffered a torn hamstring in training camp.

Young's agent Leigh Steinberg announced the news of Young's CFL departure. In March, he told UPI that his client still had a "yearning to play." He also said that if quarterback's don't have injuries to their legs, "they can play for a very long time because the arm strength doesn't diminish rapidly."

The former Texas Longhorns star made more than $35 million in salary during his NFL career.
