New York Giants sign 'Fastest Man in College Football'

May 18 (UPI) -- Carson-Newman standout Kevin Snead was one of the four players signed by the New York Giants after last weekend's tryouts.

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named Snead the "Fastest Man in College Football" last year. He clocked a 4.22-second 40-yard dash at Tennessee's Pro Day.

He should see most of his work as a kick returner, as he had just five catches for 151 yards and a touchdown the Eagles. In track, Snead set school records for the 100 and 200-meter dashes and was an All-American during the indoor season.

Snead transferred to Carson-Newman from Pima Community College and Mesa Community College. He played football at both schools. He also played football at George Wythe High School in Virginia.

The Giants hosted its tryouts last weekend at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center. SaQwan Edwards, Khalid Abdullah and Trey Robinson were also signed.

New York also waived offensive lineman Martin Wallace Monday.

Snead's 4.22 40-yard dash ties the NFL Scouting Combine record set this year by Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver John Ross.

The former Eagles speedster was expected to be a post-draft pick up in his NFL.com scouting report.

"Snead's ability to run exceptionally fast in a straight line is unquestioned, but his ability to pick up a position and become a legitimate talent who can play on the next level is," the profile said. "While rare traits will often get drafted, it is unlikely that anyone will pull the trigger on a guy with so few reps no matter how fast he is. He will find his way into a camp and have a chance to prove whether he deserves an extended look in the sport."

Snead is listed at 6-foot-190-pounds. He has also played defensive back.
