New England Patriots cut TE Rob Housler

May 17 (UPI) -- Tight end Rob Housler could join his fourth team in three seasons after getting cut by the New England Patriots.

The Super Bowl champions announced the move Wednesday. Housler, 29, is entering his sixth NFL season. He has 109 catches for 1,166 yards and one touchdown in 65 games, starting 28 times. In 2015, Housler had four catches for 33 yards, splitting time with the Chicago Bears and Cleveland Browns. Housler was a third-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in the 2011 NFL Draft.

The Florida Atlantic product signed with the Browns in 2015 as a free agent, after four seasons with the Cardinals. He played six games in Cleveland before getting cut. He signed with the Bears later that year and was released in September.

Housler did not play a snap during the 2016 season. He worked out for the Green Bay Packers and Oakland Raiders before signing a reserve/future contract with the Patriots in January.

New England released tight end Michael Williams on Friday.

The Patriots have already compensated for the departure of Martellus Bennett after trading with the Indianapolis Colts in December for Dwayne Allen. The Patriots also made an April trade with the Kansas City Chiefs for James O'Shaughnessy and re-signed Matt Lengel in March. All-Pro Rob Gronkowski is expected to be ready for offseason workouts.
