Former Green Bay Packers TE Colt Lyerla overdoses, leads to capture after escaping from jail

Former Oregon Ducks tight end Colt Lyerla escaped from a minimum-security prison in Hillsboro, Ore., on Friday and was caught later in the day, according to authorities.

According to KGW, Hillsboro police found the 24-year-old inside a home, overdosed on an unknown drug. Lyerla was transported to a local hospital.

Lyerla, who is serving a six-month jail sentence for forgery, drug possession and DUII stemming from convictions in March, escaped from the Washington County Community Corrections Center located in Hillsboro, a suburb to the west of Portland.

He reportedly opened and escaped through a first-floor window. The alarm alerted authorities, who did a prisoner check and noticed Lyerla was missing.

The 24-year-old Lyerla reportedly will face a second-degree felony charge for the escape.

Lyerla caught 34 passes for 565 yards and 11 touchdowns in 27 games with Oregon from 2011-13. He left the team after just two games in 2013 for what was termed "personal reasons."

A few months after his departure from Oregon, Lyerla pleaded guilty to cocaine possession.

He went undrafted in the 2014 NFL Draft and was signed by the Green Bay Packers. He was released after injuring a knee and never played in an NFL game.
