Fans can expect to see a 'different' Jay Cutler on TV, according to Bears, former coach

May 5 (UPI) -- Everything you've heard about Jay Cutler is naturally a bit distorted, because fans don't have the access that coaches and his former teammates have had. That's why the Chicago Bears and his former coach aren't so surprised about his new role with FOX Sports.

Cutler released a statement Friday about his decision to step off the football field and into the broadcast booth.

"There's zero doubt in my mind that there's going to be some regret," Cutler said in a WMVP-AM 1000 interview. "That's going to happen. I feel like last week, even when this decision was solid in my mind, I woke up like, 'Is this really what I want to do?' So there's going to be some of that."

"There's no doubt in my mind that come the middle of August, September, there's going to be that itch to play. And there's going to part of me where I know I still can do it. But that's not how the cards played out and that's not where we're at."

Despite not wanting to say he was retired in his statement, Cutler confirmed that his move from playing the game is "permanent" while on the radio show.

Miami Dolphins coach Adam Gase knows a thing or two about the former Bears gunslinger. Gase was Cutler's offensive coordinator in 2015 with the Bears.

He said Cutler is a "different guy" that the one portrayed by media.

"I guess I know a different guy than what everybody else portrays," Gase said Friday at Dolphins rookie minicamp. "I think a lot of things that have been said about him in the past have really been (BS)."

The Bears released a statement about its former quarterback. Cutler played for the Bears for eight seasons after being traded there by the Denver Broncos. The 2008 Pro Bowl selection completed 61.8 percent of his passes for 23,443 yards, 154 touchdowns, and 109 interceptions in 102 games. He owned a 51-51 record as a starter in Chicago.

"As I said on March 9th, I was and am a big fan of Jay Cutler," Bears chairman George H. McCaskey said in a statement. "Jay epitomized what it was to be a Chicago Bear. His ability, toughness and intelligence were on daily display at Halas Hall and Soldier Field. He had an extraordinary impact off the field, doing things for people -- especially kids -- without expecting or wanting any recognition."

"As we congratulate Jay on the end of his playing career, we also want to express our support for his transition into the next phase of his professional football career as a member of the FOX broadcast team. We're excited for the fans to get to know the Jay Cutler we knew inside the walls of Halas Hall."

Cutler, 34, is married to former reality TV show star Kristin Cavallari. The duo has three children.
