Daryl Washington, who has been suspended for the past three NFL seasons, was reinstated to the NFL on a conditional basis, the league announced on Tuesday.

Washington was a linebacker for the Arizona Cardinals when he was suspended in May 2014 after multiple violations of the NFL's substance-abuse policy.

The Cardinals were non-committal on whether they would allow Washington to return to the club.

"Considering we have been prohibited from having any contact with him over the last three years, it would be premature today to discuss a potential return to the team," the Cardinals said in a statement. "As everyone is aware, the 2017 NFL Draft is just days away and that is where our energy and attention is fully focused right now.

"At the appropriate time, we will address the issue of Daryl Washington further."

Washington recorded 18 sacks and six interceptions in four seasons with the Cardinals from 2010-13. He was a Pro Bowl selection in 2012 when he racked up a career-high nine sacks.

Washington will be eligible to participate in off-season workouts and training camp practices and games before the NFL makes an assessment in terms of his eligibility for the 2017 season.

"Prior to the start of the regular season, the NFL will review Washington's progress," the league said in a statement. "Based on his compliance and engagement with his program and resources, he will be permitted to participate in all regular season activities beginning in Week 1. He will be evaluated later in the season for full reinstatement."
