Pittsburgh Steelers expected to part ways with DeAngelo Williams

March 22 (UPI) -- One of the best backup running backs in the NFL could be searching for a job this offseason.

Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote Wednesday that the "ship has sailed" on DeAngelo Williams' time with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The 33-year-old had 343 yards and four touchdowns on 98 carries last season. He also had two receiving scores. Williams led the NFL with 11 rushing touchdowns in 2015. He also had 1,274 yards from scrimmage and started 10 games that season, while Le'Veon Bell was out with an injury. Williams was a Pro Bowl selection in 2009 with the Carolina Panthers.

While Bell was slapped with the exclusive franchise tag last month, Williams is currently a free agent. The Steelers signed Knile Davis on Monday, also signaling a move away from Williams. Williams made $2.5 million last season.

The veteran running back wrote that he wasn't sure if the Davis signing meant the end of his tenure in Pittsburgh. He was asked on Twitter if he was staying in the city.

"Not sure but it does mean they got a dynamic player I remember him showing up on our scouting report," Williams tweeted.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler wrote that the Steelers' "offensive blueprint doesn't seem to be trending toward" his return, but you "shouldn't count it out."

Williams averaged just 3.5 yards per carry last season while dealing with various injuries.
