The New England Patriots plan to release offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer, who missed the entire 2016 season with hip and shoulder injuries.

Vollmer, 32, will consider retirement, according to multiple reports.

Vollmer made 80 career starts for the Patriots after being a second-round pick in the 2009 NFL draft.

Marcus Cannon assumed Vollmer's starting right tackle position last season and performed well, helping prompt the decision.

The 6-foot-8, 315-pound Vollmer was slated to make $2.25 million in 2017.
