The New York Giants placed the non-exclusive franchise tag of defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul on Monday.

The move, first reported by Pro Football Talk, will guarantee Pierre-Paul a one-year salary that is projected to be just under $17 million if the two sides fail to reach a long-term deal.

Doug Hendrickson, Pierre-Paul's agent, told the New York Post on Monday that the sides are "nowhere" near reaching a deal, prompting the Giants to slap the tag on the pass-rushing end before Wednesday's 4 p.m. deadline.

The non-exclusive tag allows Pierre-Paul the right to negotiate with other teams and provided the Giants with the option of matching any offer sheet.

Should New York decline to match an offer, it will cost the club that signs Pierre-Paul a pair of first-round draft picks.

The 28-year-old Pierre-Paul bounced back from a fireworks accident that permanently disfigured his right hand and limited him to eight games in 2015. He finished with one sack and 26 tackles.

Pierre-Paul bounced back with a strong 2016 season, registering 7.0 sacks in his first 11 games before he was hurt in a game against Pittsburgh in Week 13. He underwent hernia surgery in early December and was lost for the rest of the season.

A first-round pick (No. 15 overall) out of South Florida in 2010, Pierre-Paul twice made the Pro Bowl and registered a career-high 16.5 sacks in 2011. He has 50 career sacks in 95 games.
