Jan. 23 (UPI) -- After drawing interest from several teams this offseason, former San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Tomsula was hired Monday.

Tomsula will coach the Washington Redskins' defensive line in 2017. He was fired last January after coaching the 49ers to a 5-11 record in 2015. Tomsula, 48, began his NFL coaching career in 2007, coaching the 49ers' defensive line. He went 0-1 as the team's interim head coach in 2010.

He also interviewed with the New Orleans Saints for the same position. The Saints previously fired Bill Johnson. The Redskins promoted outside linebackers coach Greg Manusky to defensive coordinator.

The Redskins, one of the league's worst defenses, fired defensive coordinator Joe Barry and defensive line coach Robb Akey earlier this month.
