Jan. 21 (UPI) -- 'Fat Rob' Kelley earned the starting job with a sizzling start as a feature back last season for the Washington Redskins.

Scout.com's Ben Standing reported Saturday that Kelley had surgery on his right knee after the Redskins' Week 17 loss to the New York Giants. The 24-year-old rushed for 704 yards and six touchdowns on 168 carries. His best performance came in Week 11, when he ran for 137 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries against the Green Bay Packers.

Kelley suffered a sprained knee in the Redskins' Week 16 win against the Chicago Bears. He played against the Giants while wearing a brace. The procedure was "relatively minor" and lasted about 30 to 45 minutes, according to Scout.com. It dealt with Kelley's meniscus.

Kelley earned the starting running back gig in Week 8, after Matt Jones dealt with a knee injury and fumbling issues. Jones is signed through 2018.

Head coach Jay Gruden said Kelley had a "great, great year" and sees him as "his feature back" for 2017, according to the Washington Post's Mike Jones.

Kelley was a rookie undrafted free agent. He signed a three-year, $1.62 million contract in May.
