Dallas Cowboys: Tony Romo practices but unlikely to be active Sunday

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is back at practice but not expected to be on the active roster for Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

ESPN reported Thursday night that Romo is healthy, but the Cowboys will continue to go with rookie Dak Prescott as the starter. Prescott has led Dallas to an NFC-best 7-1 record with 12 touchdown passes, two interceptions and four rushing scores.

Romo participated in an entire practice for the second consecutive day Thursday as he works his way back from a compression fracture in his back that occurred during an Aug. 25 preseason game.

"With Tony, it's just a day-by-day evaluation," Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Wednesday. "He had a good day. It followed with what he had done last week. He's moving around well. He's throwing the ball well."

Neither Garrett nor offensive coordinator Scott Linehan have committed to Romo being active this week despite his receiving medical clearance.

"Each day I think he does a little more," Linehan said Wednesday. "We've been encouraged with the response he's been able to have physically coming back the next day. He's getting better and getting stronger. We're real encouraged where he is right now."

The veteran Romo has yet to play in a regular-season game in 2016. Last year he missed the 12 games with two fractured collarbone injuries
