Jay Cutler missed Week 3 at Dallas with a sprained thumb, but the Chicago Bears are not holding the starting quarterback job for him during what is expected to be a 2-3 week recovery.

"I don't think there are any givens. And that's no indictment on anybody," Bears head coach John Fox said when asked about Cutler returning as Chicago's starting quarterback. "This is a day-to-day, week-to-week, what-have-you-done-for-me-lately league, and so we're just trying to get the best 11 guys out there regardless of the position to where we can play a full 60 minutes and get a victory."

A thumb injury was a factor in multiple turnovers Week 2 against the Philadelphia Eagles, Cutler said, because it impacted his grip. He has five turnovers, or one for every 5.6 completions (28) this season.

Brian Hoyer completed 30 of 49 pass attempts for 317 yards and two touchdowns at Dallas on Sunday night.

Cutler reportedly pushed to start the game but medical personnel did not clear him, which Fox said remains a hurdle to Cutler getting on the field. The Bears (0-3) host the Detroit Lions (1-2) at Soldier Field on Sunday.

"I think first of all the medical people have to clear him. I don't think we want to have setbacks with any player who is injured, including Jay," Fox said. "You know we'll evaluate it like I said, with all the questions I get with injuries, we're not playing yet. This is my Monday press conference. Players have tomorrow off. And we'll have a better idea on everybody come Wednesday."
