MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Superstar Adrian Peterson might not make it back to the field this season, meaning the Minnesota Vikings were suddenly running back needy.

That's why the Vikings signed Ronnie Hillman Wednesday. Peterson also announced his plans to opt for surgery to repair a torn meniscus Wednesday. The surgery is expected to bench the All-Pro for at least three or four months.

Hillman, 25, led the Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos with 863 rushing yards and seven touchdowns last season. He has 1,842 yards and 13 touchdowns in four NFL seasons.

The Broncos released Hillman before the start of the season. Jerick McKinnon is still the starter for the Vikings.
