BUFFALO, N.Y., Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Not even his hefty salary was enough to keep offensive coordinator Greg Roman on Rex Ryan's coaching staff.

On Friday the Buffalo Bills fired Roman, a day after losing 37-31 to the New York Jets.

Roman was the NFL's highest-paid offensive coordinator. Roman, 44, helped the Bills to the No. 1 ranked rushing offense in 2015. The Bills also had the No. 20 ranked passing offense, in terms of scoring. The Bills ranked No. 12 in total offense in 2015.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported the news of Roman's departure.

The Bills' next offensive coordinator will be Ryan's fifth in eight years as head coach.

Roman took the blame for the Bills' 13-7 Week 1 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

"I will definitely take the blame myself," Roman told reporters last weekend. "I think I can do a better job putting us in positions to be successful."

NFL Network National Insider Ian Rapoport reported that assistant and running back coach Anthony Lynn was appointed offensive coordinator.
