DALLAS, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo could be out anywhere from 4 to 10 weeks, according to president and general manager Jerry Jones.

In an interview with 1053 The Fan, Jones said that he's "not sure anyone knows" how long the quarterback will be out.

Romo left after three snaps in Thursday's preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. It was later announced that he suffered a broken bone in his back.

For now, rookie Dak Prescott looks poised to steer the ship. Prescott has had the best preseason of any quarterback.

Romo, 36, will not require surgery but will need adequate time to heal. The Cowboys have a week 7 bye week and some analysts expect him to eye a week 8 return. Jones also said that the team is deciding if they want to put Romo on injured reserve. That move would have him sit out for at least the first eight weeks of the 2016 season.

Romo hasn't played a 16-game season since 2012. Last season he missed 12 games after a collarbone injury. He has broken his collarbone three times.

Monday Morning Quarterback's Albert Breer reported Monday that Romo "should be training in 3 to 6 weeks."
