SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 29 (UPI) -- San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick had the right to take a stand this preseason, when he decided to sit for the national anthem in protest.

The San Francisco 49ers have a right to take a stand against Kaepernick for his poor quarterback play.

According to FOX Sports' Jay Glazer, the 49ers "might not" include Kaepernick on its roster this season.

"Regardless of politics or not, he has a very, very big uphill battle to make this team," Glazer reported, via Pro Football Talk. "I'd be shocked if he's on the 49ers by the time this season ends. It has nothing to do with political views whatsoever. He lost a ton of weight this offseason, had three surgeries, couldn't work out, lost that double threat, that size-speed ratio. No political views, he just hasn't been effective. He's regressing as a player. I'd be shocked if he's on this roster by the end of this year. He may not be on it in the next two weeks."

Kaepernick has $11.9 million in guaranteed cash this season. He was in a battle with Blaine Gabbert for the starting gig throughout the preseason. Christian Ponder and Jeff Driskel are also on the roster.

On Friday, 49ers coach Chip Kelly said there has "never been a conversation about cutting Colin Kaepernick," according to Bay Area News Group's Cam Inman.

Kaepernick completed 2-of-6 passes for 14 yards in his first preseason game of 2016 against the Green Bay Packers. The 49ers cut it roster to 75 players Tuesday.

Although he has not played well, 49ers personnel also has to deal with a rift in its locker room, following his political stand. Kelly said the competition is "ongoing," according to USA TODAY.

"We'll sit down as a staff, we got to watch the film," Kelly told USA TODAY. "We're never going to make any decisions when walking off the field in terms of where we are."

The Sacramento Bee reported that "all signs point to Gabbert" starting for the 49ers, following Kaepernick's Packers performance.

The 28-year-old is due $16.5 million next season and signed through 2021. In 2020, he is set to make $21 million. Gabbert is a free agent in 2017.
